Filmmaker Chris Jones Awarded Prestigious Take Notice Fund Grant for Norma
December 20, 2024 – Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Filmmaker Chris Jones is proud to announce that his upcoming period drama, Norma, has been awarded the esteemed Take Notice Fund grant by the National Performance Network (NPN). This grant recognizes and supports BIPOC artists living and working in Louisiana, providing them with vital resources to advance their artistic practices.
Set in 1933 Louisiana, Norma tells the story of Norma Ann Waters, a guarded, aging blues singer determined to revive her career in a racially divided and rapidly changing music industry. The film explores themes of resilience, legacy, and self-discovery while celebrating the transformative power of Louisiana blues and jazz. With a female lead and a diverse cast, Norma honors the artists who shaped modern music, offering a story that is both timeless and deeply relevant.
“This grant celebrates artists and culture bearers whose work demonstrates artistic excellence and dedication to their practices,” says Stephanie Atkins, Director of Southern Programs at NPN. “It is our aim to grow this program in recognition of the many artists in the South whose work contributes to this country’s discourse about racial equity and cultural preservation.”
Receiving this grant is a pivotal milestone for Norma, marking its first secured funding and propelling the project into production. For Chris Jones, the grant represents a powerful validation of his vision:
“There were times I doubted myself and wondered if this story was something audiences would care about. Receiving this grant is not just financial support—it’s a reminder that Norma resonates, that it matters, and that it has a place in the world. This funding lays the foundation for additional fundraising efforts and brings us closer to making this dream a reality.”
The grant will be used to support the production of Norma, a project that highlights the rich cultural heritage of Louisiana blues and jazz. The film seeks to expand the scope of Black narratives in cinema, balancing adversity with artistry and triumph while paving the way for more nuanced representations of the Black experience.
Jones, an award-winning filmmaker, brings his passion for preserving history and telling authentic, emotionally resonant stories to Norma. With its universal themes of perseverance and self-expression, the film is poised to inspire audiences and honor the transformative power of music.
